Garden and Yard Safety

safe yard products

There are millions of minor gardening injuries a year, with 100,000 of those being severe and lawn mower related. In past studies, estimates indicate more than 3,000 people are fatally injured in yard related accidents.
The most dangerous tool used around the home is the gas-powered lawn mower.  Lawn mower blades can run from 100 to 200 miles an hour, with gas powered blades spinning 2,000 to 4,000 times per minute turning any toy, debris or rock into a deadly flying weapon.

Using common sense and taking time to search the yard – each time before you mow – for any object hidden from sight and making sure no one else is around while mowing is a necessary precaution.

Wearing protective gear while operating machinery such as chain saws, hedge trimmers, and mowers when working in the garden is important to avoid serious injury.  Protective gear can include, steel toed boots, gloves, goggles and making sure all loose clothing is tucked in.

If not used properly or carelessly, garden tools can be hazardous and sometimes fatal.  The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission estimates more than 400,000 outdoor garden tool related accidents per year ending in emergency room treatment

Using common sense and following general safety tips such as lifting heavy items properly, pacing yourself – especially in the heat, keeping tools sharp and clean, storing chemicals, organics and sharp tools away from children, wearing safety equipment and kneepads, being mindful of cords and connections of electrical equipment at all times, and never leave gas powered equipment running.

Some of the most common accidents around the home involve, surprisingly, the flowerpot. These injuries are due to lifting, cuts, and falls while moving the flowerpot around. Another hazard in the garden and around the home is the stepladder.

Injuries result from facing sideways, overstretching, leaving tools on the top platform of the ladder, damaged rungs, slippery surface, and placing the ladder on uneven ground. The most common accident in a garden is a fall, but the biggest threat is a cut and being hit by something.

People between the ages of 30-60 are likely to be injured with men more likely to have garden accidents than women.
